Infographics in Education 

Infographics are a powerful way to present complex information clearly and visually. They combine images, data, and concise text “that gives an easy-to-understand overview of a topic” (Venngage, n.d.). As a pre-service teacher, this format is so valuable for communicating essential digital safety messages to students in a way that’s engaging and age-appropriate.

 

I have created an infographic that explores the key aspects of digital ethics and safety, including responsible online behaviour, managing digital footprints, and protecting personal information. The goal is to give students a quick visual reference they can revisit, whether they’re just starting to use devices at school or navigating social media at home.

I created the "Staying Safe Online" infographic using canva, to help deepen not only my understanding of digital safety and ethics, but to share with future students and their families. I chose to focus on core concepts, such as protecting personal data, recognising online risks, and promoting respectful online interactions. This was an opportunity to translate key digital safety concepts into a visually engaging and accessible format.

 

Since I used Canva, I simply selected an infographic template that matched the overall topic, adding some more images relating to digital technology and then added in my subheading and text in vertical scroll design. This mirrors the natural flow of reading and easily translates to an online format on either a computer or phone. I organised the infographic into six clear sections, each with a short explanation and an accompanying image. This layout was deliberately chosen to scaffold the content into manageable chunks, making it easier for a younger audience to digest.

 

I chose to make some bold design choices, using bright illustrations and bold text to make the infographic more engaging and readable, without overwhelming the viewer. Each icon visually represents its corresponding point, which supports visual learners and reinforces the message even if the text is skimmed.

 

Overall, this task highlighted the importance of clarity, accessibility, and intentional design in educational communication. Infographics like this one can serve as a powerful tool to introduce students to digital citizenship and safety, creating responsible online habits and behaviours from a young age.
